Lufthansa 747 First Class Cabin
Lufthansa’s first class used to be very poor on their 747-400 planes – solo travellers often had to sit side by side with strangers, which is a million miles from the private apartments offered by some airlines!
To be fair to Lufthansa, they realised their first class was no longer competitive and have gone for a simple but extremely effective trick to upgrade their cabin – they give each passenger a pair of seats, and have converted one of these seats to a proper full-time bed.
This means that neither the bed nor the seat have to compromise in quality, although Lufthansa can obviously only sell half the tickets they could before! At a stroke, Lufthansa’s 747-400 first class has gone from being a laughing stock to one of the best in the world.
Onboard the Lufthansa 747-400 First Class
This is an amazing cabin – unlike most other airlines, Lufthansa have put their first class upstairs on the 747 – in the 747 upper deck ‘bubble’. There’s a maximum of 8 passengers on any flight – British Airways squeezes in 20 business class passengers in to the same space, and that’s regarded as one of the quietest cabins going!
The whole cabin was spotlessly clean and in great condition. Although each seat didn’t have a private door (unlike airlines such as Jet Airways) the sheer space between each seat gave good privacy from all but your immediate neighbor.
It’s clear that Lufthansa have benefited from being able to give everyone a dedicated first class seat and a first class bed – the lack of machinery needed to convert from bed to seat (seen in just about everyone else’s first class cabin) means that the seat is as comfortable as an armchair and the bed is a proper mattress on a fully flat surface.
The only loser is the Lufthansa shareholders, as a conventional design would allow Lufthansa to fit in more passengers!
Best Seats in Lufthansa 747-400 First Class
There’s not much difference between each of these seats – everyone gets a window view, everyone gets direct aisle access and everyone has a neighbor opposite. If you can, pick rows 82 or 83 – these are furthest from the toilets, galley and stairs.
Lufthansa 747-400 First Class Conclusions
Lufthansa should be applauded for investing in such a significant upgrade for their 747-400 First Class cabin; whilst the business class service lags well behind the competition on these planes, first class is right up there with the best of them. The first class cabin is an extremely comfortable way to travel, and we would certainly try it out on a longer flight.
